In situ assessment of the brain microcirculation in mechanically-ventilated rabbits using Sidestream dark-field (SDF) imaging Authors

چکیده
Assessment of the cerebral microcirculation by on-line visualization has been impossible for a long time. Sidestream dark-field (SDF) imaging is a relatively new method allowing direct visualization of cerebral surface layer microcirculation using hand-held probe for direct contact with target tissue. The aim of this study was to elucidate the feasibility of studying the cerebral microcirculation in situ by SDF imaging and to assess the basic cerebral microcirculatory parameters in mechanically ventilated rabbits. Images were obtained using SDF imaging from the surface of the brain via craniotomy. Clear high contrast SDF images were successfully obtained. Total small-vessel density was 14.6±1.8 mm/mm 2 , total all-vessel density was 17.9±1.7 mm/mm 2 , DeBacker score was 12.0±1.6 µm-1 and microvascular flow index was 3.0±0.0. This method seems to be applicable in animal studies with possibility to use SDF imaging also intraoperatively, providing unique opportunity to study cerebral microcirculation during various experimental and clinical settings.

متن کاملIn situ assessment of the renal microcirculation in mechanically ventilated rats using sidestream dark-field imaging.
For microcirculation research there is a need for baseline data and feasibility protocols describing microcirculation of various organs. The aim of our study was to examine the reliability and reproducibility of sidestream dark-field (SDF) imaging within the renal cortical microcirculation in rats. Renal microcirculation was observed using SDF probe placed on the exposed renal surface via the u...
متن کاملEffects of hypertonic saline and mannitol on cortical cerebral microcirculation in a rabbit craniotomy model
BACKGROUND Hyperosmolar solutions have been used in neurosurgery to modify brain bulk and prevent neurological deterioration. The aim of this animal study was to compare the short-term effects of equivolemic, equiosmolar solutions of mannitol and hypertonic saline (HTS) on cerebral cortical microcirculation in a rabbit craniotomy model. METHODS Rabbits (weight, 2.0-3.0 kg) were anesthetized, ...
متن کاملImprovement of Sidestream Dark Field Imaging with an Image Acquisition Stabilizer
BACKGROUND In the present study we developed, evaluated in volunteers, and clinically validated an image acquisition stabilizer (IAS) for Sidestream Dark Field (SDF) imaging. METHODS The IAS is a stainless steel sterilizable ring which fits around the SDF probe tip. The IAS creates adhesion to the imaged tissue by application of negative pressure. The effects of the IAS on the sublingual micr...
متن کاملOrthogonal Polarization Spectral (OPS)/Sidestream dark field (SDF) imaging: a new method for the observation of the microcirculation in pediatrics
Microcirculation plays an important role both in physiological and pathophysiological states. Early recognition of changes in microcirculation is crucial for starting early therapeutic intervention and reversing the organ failure. Orthogonal polarization spectral (OPS) and Sidestream dark field imaging (SDF) are relatively new noninvasive methods that allow direct visualisation of the microcirc...
